Jack Mlynski, Alain Coupel, Daniel Locci et Stanislas Belloc
fondent le groupe français de rock progressif ARTCANE.
Jack Mlynski, guitariste et chanteur, et Alain Coupel, guitariste, bassiste et chanteur, deux musiciens ayant joué ensemble dans une formation en 1968, décident de former un groupe de rock expérimental à la fin de l’année 1973. Alain Coupel, passionné de sons électroniques, trouve sa place aux synthétiseurs et aux claviers, et Jack Mlynski, aux guitares. Daniel Locci, pianiste classique, et également batteur et percussionniste, se joint à eux. Stanislas Belloc rejoint la formation en tant que bassiste et chanteur, en mai 1974.
Les membres du groupe s’établissent alors à la campagne, où ils aménagent un studio d’enregistrement, et composent un répertoire. Un nom pour la formation musicale est trouvé “ARTCANE”, étant la combinaison de deux mots, art et arcane, de même qu’un logo, un bateau égyptien se reflétant sur le Nil, “une Felouque”, symbole d’évasion pour le groupe.
Jack Mlynski, guitar and vocals, and Alain Coupel, guitar, bass, and vocals (having played together in a group in 1967-1968), decide at the end 1973 to form an experimental rock band. Alain Coupel, with a strong interest in electronic sounds, plays synthesiser and keyboards, and Jack Mlynski guitars. Daniel Locci, a classically trained pianist, and also a drummer and percussionist, joins them. Beginning 1974, the three ask Stanislas Belloc, a friend of Alain Coupel, to complete the group as bass player.
In the same year, the musicians establish themselves on a farm in the country near Clermont-Ferrand, where they install a recording studio and compose a new repertoire. A name for the new group is found: ARTCANE, a combination of two words "art" and "arcane". A logo is also chosen for the group: the felucca (an Egyptian boat ), reflecting in the Nile river, a symbol of dream and escape.
En novembre 1974, ARTCANE donne un premier concert en public. Le groupe enchaîne ensuite par une série de performances musicales, avec le soutien du journal La Montagne et de FR3 Auvergne.
Au mois de juillet 1975, ARTCANE est invité par Danièle Gilbert sur TF1, dans l’émission Midi première. ARTCANE est alors vu par des milliers de téléspectateurs dans toute la France. En septembre de la même année, le groupe est à nouveau devant les caméras de TF1, à Paris, partageant le plateau avec l’orchestre de chambre de Bernard Thomas. Il est à nouveau l’hôte de cette chaîne en juin 1976.
En février et mars 1976, François Wertheimer, artiste, producteur, et parolier de Barbara (album La Louve), et Alain Vigne produisent la musique d’ARTCANE. Six titres sont enregistrés au studio Léo Clarens à Vincennes, et mixés à Paris aux studios Ferber: Odyssée, le Chant d’Orphée, Novembre, 25ème anniversaire, Artcane 1, et Nostalgie.
In November 1974, ARTCANE gave its first public concert. The group then followed up with a series of musical performances, supported by the newspaper La Montagne and FR3 Auvergne.
In July 1975, ARTCANE was invited by Danièle Gilbert on TF1, in the program Midi Première. ARTCANE was then seen by thousands of viewers all over France. In September of the same year, the group once again appeared in front of TF1’s cameras in Paris, sharing the stage with Bernard Thomas’s chamber orchestra. They returned to the channel again in June 1976.
In February and March 1976, François Wertheimer—artist, producer, and lyricist for Barbara (album La Louve)—and Alain Vigne produced ARTCANE’s music. Six tracks were recorded at Léo Clarens Studio in Vincennes and mixed in Paris at Ferber Studios: Odyssée, Le Chant d’Orphée, Novembre, 25ème Anniversaire, Artcane 1, and Nostalgie.
Le 11 février 1976, ARTCANE se produit pour la première fois dans sa ville de Clermont-Ferrand, à l’amphi X de la faculté de droit, devant plusieurs centaines de spectateurs.
En avril 1977, ARTCANE signe un contrat de disque avec la maison PHILIPS PHONOGRAM. ARTCANE est le premier groupe rock d’Auvergne à signer avec une grande maison de disque internationale.
En mai 1977, l’album ODYSSEE sort en France. ODYSSEE est bien accueilli par la presse spécialisée, notamment Rock et Folk, Rock en Stock, Best, et Unicorn Times, aux U.S.A.
On February 11, 1976, ARTCANE performed for the first time in its hometown of Clermont-Ferrand, at the Law Faculty’s Amphi X, before several hundred spectators.
In April 1977, ARTCANE signs a recording contract with PHILIPS PHONOGRAM, becoming the first rock band from Auvergne to sign with a major international label.
In May 1977, the album ODYSSÉE is pressed and distributed throughout France. The record is well received by the specialised press in France, notably in ‘Rock et Folk’, ‘Rock en Stock’, ‘Best’, and also by ‘Unicorn Times’, in the USA.
Après la sortie du disque, ARTCANE part en tournée dans tout l’hexagone, et se produit dans les Maisons de la culture, théâtres et centres culturels, pour promouvoir sa musique.
En janvier 1978, FR3 Auvergne donne son feu vert pour le tournage d’un court-métrage sur ARTCANE – ARTCANE au château de Landogne – sous la direction du journaliste et réalisateur Geoffroy Soutrelle.
With the new record out, ARTCANE goes on tour, playing in Maisons de la culture, theatres, cultural centres, to promote it’s music all over France.
In January 1978, FR3 Auvergne gave the green light for the filming of a short documentary about ARTCANE — ARTCANE at the Château de Landogne — directed by journalist and filmmaker Geoffroy Soutrelle.
Au printemps 1978, du matériel musical est prêt pour l’enregistrement d’un deuxième disque. Malheureusement, les pièces de musique ne seront pas produites par PHILIPS, le label préférant mettre fin au contrat d’ARTCANE, après un changement de personnel au sein de la direction artistique.
En décembre 1978, ARTCANE donne son dernier concert au théâtre de Roanne.
En début d’année 1979, Alain Coupel quitte le groupe. Jack Mlynski, Stanislas Belloc et Daniel Locci se concertent alors sur l’avenir du groupe, et décident de mettre fin à ARTCANE.
In the spring of 1978, new musical material was ready for the recording of a second album. Unfortunately, the pieces were never produced by PHILIPS, as the label decided to terminate ARTCANE’s contract following changes in its artistic management.
In December 1978, ARTCANE performed its final concert at the Théâtre de Roanne.
At the beginning of 1979, Alain Coupel left the band. Jack Mlynski, Stanislas Belloc, and Daniel Locci then discussed the group’s future and decided to bring ARTCANE to an end.
